Edwardian Hallway

A two-tone colour scheme of soft pink and grey was selected for the narrow hallway to increase the sense of light and space. It provides a balanced contrast to the blue of the adjacent living room on the right and stairwell leading to the second floor on the left, increasing the sense of space further.

Design concept

I decided the grey would be painted beneath the dado rail so that it acted as an anchor to the floor, and the pink to be painted on the walls above the dado rail as it’s visually lighter and gives the impression of widening the space.

Very close to the front entrance of the house, the effect is welcoming, light and warm on stepping through the door.

Paint palette

The pink is Setting Plaster and the grey, Elephants Breath, both by Farrow and Ball.

They are soft, elegant hues and worked well in this space which ran from east facing at the entrance to the house through to west facing at the back as they have enough depth of pigment to handle lower and higher levels of light without looking over powered or washed out.

Both shades complement the Edwardian architecture as mid-strength pinks and greys were commonly used in Edwardian décor, so this was a lovely touch as well as tying in nicely with the client’s pink, glass light pendant on the second floor landing.
